This week I attended meetings about the future of Litter Landing. It was great to see a small group of concerned citizens engaged and I thought it was great that Commissioner Pepple and the committee engaged these folks and were able to answer their questions. I am known for engaging citizens and answering questions on city council and will do the same as commissioner.
If you haven’t heard there has been discussion about possibly hiring a 3rd party to manage recycling. There are a lot of options on the table. If things transition this way it was expressed that the workers at Litter Landing will have options to apply for other county open jobs and the manager will stay on as the staff coordinator/administrator.
1. The county is investigating possible additional locations for pick-up in the city for convenience. The City of Findlay is not in support of allowing city properties to have recycle bins. The townships already have recycle bins.
2. There is discussion on whether Litter Landing on Sandusky would stay open or close. Hundreds of citizens use Litter Landing a week. Litter Landing is subsidized thousands a year.
3. If a contract is written with a 3rd party it will be detailed on how many pick-ups per week, clean up and appearance around the recycle bins – if things are not followed there would be built in penalties (citizens need to also be mindful not to set trash or overflow recycle on the ground around the bins)
The commissioners are evaluating this to save money and more efficiently manage recycling. Commissioner Pepple mentioned several other counties who have gone to 3rd party, and it sounds like it works well for those counties with cost savings. I look forward to getting more information as it comes available.
I think it is worth the discussion and RFP (Request for Proposal) are going out in next month. I look forward to seeing what the proposals look like and further discussion.
